Judges, instructors, coordinators, invited guests, trainees and my fellow participants, good morning. I am miss Christal Joseph a trainee of the Anse-La-Raye center. I will be talking about,

Do you know what abuse means? According to the oxford dictionary abuse is and I quote “to mistreat, to speak insultingly or heartless and to use incorrectly” end of quote. Must it always be ill death do us part.”

The different classifications of abuse are: Verbal, Physical, Emotional and Sexual.

Verbal abuse: Which is a form of abusive behavior involving the use of language? It is a form of profanity in that it can occur or without the use of bad language.

Many men are obviously verbally cruel and abusive. Others are more subtle.

Although verbal abuse does not leave black eyes or visible bruises, it is often more seriously damaging to your self-image. Verbal abuse is cruel and scars your soul.

In 1993 National Crime Statistics Report, 90% of battered women reported that their children were present when they were beaten. 1994 Family Violence Prevention Fund, Every 9 seconds, a woman is battered in the U.S. Lets take about 9 second and try to listen what you hear. Right now man is battering a woman or child is being abused.

Why do intelligent, warm women permit verbal abuse from boyfriends and later from spouses? Sticks and stones ... and that saying of old keep many women in place until verbal abuse has destroyed their self-esteem, making leaving even harder. Verbal abuse can and sometimes does, turn physical.

Physical abuse: is abuse involving contact intended to cause feelings of intimidation, pain, injury, or other physical suffering or harm.

Physical abuse is usually a symptom of an abusive relationship and can involve punching, slapping, burning or cutting. Abuse thrives on privacy, and often injuries are inflicted on areas hidden from view. Where the abuse is less controlled, as in cases involving alcohol and drugs, injuries are more random. Often an injury alerts the outside world to on-going abuse, as in childhood bullying or within a close relationship.

Emotional Abuse is any behavior that is designed to control another human being through the use of fear, humiliation, intimidation, guilt, manipulation etc. This abuse is more emotional than physical in nature. It can include anything from verbal abuse and constant criticism.

Many women assume that if they're not being physically abused by their partner, then they're not being abused. That's not necessarily true. You may be in a relationship which is draining something from you -- you might not have recognized that your partner has eroded your self-esteem and happiness.

Sexual abuse: is sexual contact that is forced tricked, threatened, also referred to as molestation, is the forcing of undesired sexual acts by one person upon another. The offender is referred to as a molester, sexual abuser. When the victim is younger than the age of consent, it is referred to as "child sexual abuse ".

When one person uses power and or authority to take advantage of someone sexually. Child sexual abuse is a form of child abuse in which a child is abused for the sexual gratification of an adult or older adolescent. A type of maltreatment that refers to the involvement of the child in sexual activity to provide sexual gratification or financial benefit to the performer, including contacts for sexual purposes, statutory rape, prostitution, pornography, exposure, incest, or other sexually. It is estimated that 90 percent of special needs children have been sexually abused in some fashion. This includes boys, girls and even infants and toddlers. Sexual abuse ranges from children witnessing adult sexual behavior, fondling and intercourse. Such abuse may be nonphysical, for example, obscene phone calls or indecent exposure, or physical, for example, fondling or intercourse. That can lead to suicide running away and we can even get addicted to it, I mean that we can be abusive all our lives and it can cause big problem with our future relationship. And nobody not knowing what we been throw it will be hard for us, you might even go crazy. It doesn’t matter if you out there and you haven’t been sexual abuse but you have been abuse either way it can be verbal, emotionally or physically.

Let’s take a look at The Star news paper

Reported by Rick Wayne word that a 23 year old accountant was battered near to death by her former lover is being treated by the media in the fashion normally associated with such outrageous behavior.

Predictably, the story has not ended, and I quote most of them obviously unconcerned with what news spin host Timothy Poleon described as “The Bigger Picture” end of quote. One gentleman expressed his disgust at the fact that many Saint Lucian men forget their mothers and sisters are woman. Continue to look upon wife batterers in the same light as parents who beat their children. And I quote” If you beat them with love,” they say, “there’s nothing wrong with that. “End of quote. After all, somewhere in the Old or New Testament believers are told that to spare the rod is to spoil the child and invite disaster.

We once had in our government a gender affairs minister who kicked his wife down a flight of stairs while armed with a gun, in the presence of his two impressionable sons. Could you imagine all these abuse and it is still going on. Then there was the parliamentarian and lawyer who habitually beat his wife but was never challenged of chastised by his house colleagues. Small wonder that the latest uncovered batterer, even as he was beating the hell out of his ex-girlfriend, assured her that she would be wasting her time calling the police. After all, he was not just anybody; he was somebody with connections to the government. She on the other hand was just “small fry in a large pan of oil.” What can we woman say or do for ourselves, when we being battered, will we ever have the right or the strength to do something out of the way. In my point of view I always say that we, the once cooking, cleaning and giving him every thing he ask for. And in return what do we ladies get abuse. Every body gets abuse and battered haven’t you heard the story about the R/B singer Chris Brown, where he were making criminal threats and was under investigation for the more serious charge of felony domestic violence. Rihanna is named the victim. The incident happen when Rihanna allegedly argued with Chris Brown outside his car on the way back from a pre Grammy party. The argument escalated, Rihanna is said to suffered visible injuries, and Chris Brown was her assailant. When will that ever stop? I believe when someone is dead by abuse or domestic violence they will put it into consideration.

Please take this into consideration and internalize it, as I am saying these things right now hundreds of people is getting abuse or bitten to death. So watch what you say or do to your peers. And to you our young boys I would love if you don’t raise your hand or finger to your girlfriend mom or sister. Thank you

Perspective on The Distribution Of Condoms in Schools

By Eastel Desir

Joint 2nd Place Winner

Judges, Invited guests, Co-odinators, Instructors, Trainees, Fellow opponents, Good morning .I am Miss Eastel Desir representing C.A.R.E. Anse-la Raye. I am delighted to openly and frankly discuss the contentious issue of the distributing condoms in schools.

Here is my Perspective of the distribution of condoms in Schools.

What is a Condom? According to Wikipedia .Com “I Quote, A condom is defined as a device most commonly used during sexual intercourse. It physically blocks semen, blood from entering the body of a sexual partner, in order to prevent pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases such as Syphilis. . End of Quote.” Although researchers have found that using condoms is considered by most experts to be the easiest, least expensive and the least intrusive method of conception. This is untrue, Abstinence is the top priority, Abstinence is clearly more effective than using condoms. It is 100% effective in the prevention of pregnancies, and it is 99% effective in the Transmission of STD’s when used properly.

Why would the Government or any other body want to distribute condoms to our young impressionable teenagers who are not yet able to provide for or maintain themselves or anyone else?

The argument for wanting to distribute condoms in Schools is that students are already sexually active, and when that happens they can protect themselves. That statement is true. They can protect themselves because of the distribution of condoms, but this is actually saying that you are encouraging students to have sex even if it will be safe. This does not set a good example. It is like a prostitute punishing her daughter for having multiple sexual partners.

Let us imagine that the distribution of condoms was a reality, this would just enable students to access condoms easily and on a daily basis depending on how often it is distributed. Students will be encouraged to engage in protected sex with access to condoms gradually becoming easier and would most definitely increase sex among students in schools.

Hon. Dr. Stephenson King, Are you telling students it is okay to have sex during and after school? I think that the fact that condoms are available everywhere at several shops, and health centers, if sexual intercourse is taking place outside of school hours, then there is every opportunity for them to get access to condoms. But if you now going to distribute condoms at schools, what would be the rationale? It is even going to be worse because children are going to have sex anyway whether you like it or not, so the only thing to do is to try to prevent Aid’s, Std’s and pregnancies. Children under the age of 18 are not trusted enough to make independent decisions. Therefore I believe you should not give the go-ahead, until the matter has discussed with parents and the public at large, because parents may not want condoms to be distributed to their children.

What is a School? According to Wikipedia. Com a School is defined as an institution designed to allow and encourage students to learn, under the supervision of teachers.

Let us for a moment examine the purpose of a school. Children spend most of their time in schools (except of course during vacations). I am sure some of you can recall going back to school and hearing something from your teacher. As usual on your arrival home you were excited to tell your mom about it. She would tell you that the teacher was wrong and that this was the right thing. I would defend my teacher because what my teacher said was right. Now tell me, if my teacher gives me a condom and says to practice safe sex, who am I to disagree.

Friends’ on a whole have a role to play as well, because I remember when having sex at a young age, it was embarrassing, something that children would not be broadcasting. But now it is a major accomplishment to loose your virginity at a younger age, the younger the better. Many of my friends’s had sex at the average age of 13-14 years old. Three of them could name almost all the sex positions. While, when I was 13 years I was just figuring out how to work a scientific calculator. This is bad, because eventually it will result in teenage pregnancy. Should I be aiming for promiscuity, instead of academic excellence? According to the World Health Organization, more than one in two teen girls got pregnant in 2002. Let’s think about that, look at all the girl’s in this room, this simply means that more than half of the girl’s are likely to become pregnant soon, and of course it is unfair to the new born baby as they are being brought to the unstable environment, for they are unlikely to ever know their father.

Most Parents believe that making condoms so easily accessible promotes sexual activity amongst students. Parents send their children to school to learn about sex education, not to get a free pass at performing the act themselves. Slogans are emphasized everyday, Be wise, Condomize, Use a condom each and every time you have sex- this just gives children the intentions that it is okay to have sex at their age, as long as they protect themselves from HIV/Aid’s and other STD’s .Drivers know that they are required to drive with their seatbelts, but they still drive without it because it is comfortable. What then is to prevent a child from having sex without a condom? I mean, after you are exposed to sex, is there any turning back? The answer is No!! Because my arguments have showed that the results are teenage pregnancies and the spread of STD’s. If children can make the decision to have sex, can’t they also be mature enough to go to the drugstore and purchase condoms? Although many are afraid as a result of discrimination. How are they so sure there will not be discrimination in schools? I believe the form of accessing condoms just has to be made more private. If a child is already engaging in sexual intercourse, then that child should seek a guidance counselor, where he/she will be counseled and given advice.

I think that we should take this into consideration. The government does not give these children the right to vote, or drive, so why give them the right to have sex?

We do not think that these children are responsible enough to vote, drink or drive, but to those same children we say here, use a condom, protect yourself, to prevent the spread of HIV/Aid’s.

The other major problem is Sexually Transmitted Diseases. After profound research it has been recorded that St. Lucia has recorded over 600 cases of HIV/ Aid’s. Can you believe that? Over 17% of people with HIV/Aid’s in the Caribbean may have contracted the diseases when in their teens or earlier 20’s. I can almost hear some of you saying, but surely the distribution of condoms would help reverse this trend. Although, condoms maybe considered as the safest way to prevent STD’s and HIV. We are still at risk because condoms are not fully 100%effective, and the risk is greatly increased even misused.

From my perspective, young people today need to know about condoms, how to use them and where to get it from, but schools don’t provide that type of information. Students should be taught the importance of condoms, and where to obtain them if they choose to have sex. We should not allow sex to become the cheap commodity that it has become the consequences are far too serious. From a biblical point of view sex is something that should be practiced only in marriage. If this is adopted there would be no need to distribute condoms in schools. We should therefore listen to the church and save sex for procreation and as a cherished part of the husband and wife relationship.

So tell me if you were a 13 year old child, would you listen to the government (The people who rule the country), Your teacher (The person you admire or look at as your role model), Your Parent (The people who should have your best interest at hand) Your Friend’s (The people who convinced you to do anything be it right or wrong) OR ME Your Conscience? I thank you!!!!!!

Juvenile Delinquency

By Shala David

The Director of C.A.R.E., Dr Karlene Mason, Coordinators, Instructors, Madam Chairperson, Visitors, My fellow school mates: A pleasant good morning to all.
This morning I am here to present you with a speech about Juvenile Delinquency.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, and I quote: “A juvenile is an individual under the age of eighteen whereas Juvenile Delinquency is persons involved in negative activities,” end of quote. According to the Studies, Social Studies for Essential CXC by Memn Sandy and Stephanson L. Grayson, and I quote: “ Drug abuse, Stealing, Gambling, Robbery with Violence/Extortion, Use of Obscene Language, Defacing School property, Possession of pornographic materials such as porn C.D.’s, books, and using the internet to access pornographic videos etc.” end of quote.

I really believe that the majority of teenagers today are being delinquent especially the young men. I don’t believe that persons just like myself should be considered delinquent. According to the Voice newspaper on 1st November, 2008, I quote: “On Wednesday, October 29th, 2008, at a secondary school in the northern part of the island, in the first incident a 23 year old who was resident in Tirochair Castries: Kimron Polius was arrested. According to a police press release, Polius was said to have been in possession of a 9mm firearm and one round of ammunition,” end of quote. When someone is delinquent it slows down the way he/she thinks and reacts to everything violent.

What causes someone to be delinquent? According to the Studies, Social Studies for Essential CXC, and I quote, “There is an increase in evidence that 95% of children who are delinquent come from dysfunctional families where they are unwanted, unloved, not cared for, abused and humiliated.this causes most children to desert their
homes (runaways) and as a result they become involved in criminal and drug activities in some cases in jail, dead and the girls pregnant and looking for love in all the wrong places. This is a growing problem in my community. The problems increase as the individual performs poorly at school, suffers from a low self-esteem or if there is a large increase of criminal activities in the community.

Ladies and Gentlemen, What are the solutions to these problems? Solutions to the problems include:
1. Counselling and Rehabilitation
2. An educational system that builds self-esteem and is sensitive to students with emotional problems applying moral education to change destructive behaviours.
3. Building of communities with heavy emphasis on sports and recreation such as tennis, football, cricket, netball, basketball and girl guides. You will definitely agree with me that the C.A.R.E. programme incorporates the above-mentioned with instructors who cater to the specific needs of individual trainees which helps to curb delinquency in our society in bringing an end to the Juvenile Delinquency epidemic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, take a drive up to Gros Islet to the boys’ training centre to see the reality of my topic. Ladies and Gentlemen, let us work together to make the change we wish to see. Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you!

The Director of C.A.R.E. Dr Karlene Mason, co-ordinators, instructors, madam chairperson, jusges, visitors, my fellow trainees, I greet you.

Render me your ears, come closer. Let me whisper it to you…Gossip, Gossip, Gossip!

Within the Little Oxford English Dictionary, Gossip is defined as, and I quote: “a casual conversation about other people”, end of quote.

The Wikipedia online dictionary defines Gossip as, and I quote “idle talk or rumour; especially about the private affairs of others”, end of quote. According to the Wikipedia online dictionary, Gossip forms one of the oldest and most common means of sharing facts and views, but also has a reputation for the introduction of false implication or news of a trivial nature.

But my fellow peers, Gossip is more than just a casual conversation! In my own perspective, Gossip is a treacherous, deceitful way of manipulating an unsuspecting individual into believing that such said is such believable by word of the persuasive individual who brings it.

Gossip is a nasty way of spreading dirty misinformation through excited discussion about a so-called scandal. I believe that Gossip is used to harm others with a passive form of aggression. Gossip is so much like a virus that it can be found everywhere the mouth chatters, the eyes glare and the ear quivers!

And that virus affects us all, even when we are not aware of it. It is so sneaky that some of us don’t even realise the symptoms of Gossip such as jealousy, grudges, hatred, intolerance and lies:

  • Jealousy: because you can’t stand to see someone happy in something they can do well so you bad-talk them to make yourself feel better.

  • Grudges: to know that someone is so high up there that you say any mean thing about them to bring them down.

  • Hatred: to see someone so caught up in life, so you do and say what you can to destroy them and this is one symptom that could lead to murder.

“How so?” you might ask. Worst case scenario: A girl sees a guy she likes but can’t have him because her friend is his girlfriend. She hates the girlfriend so much that she tells the guy a terrible lie about what his girlfriend does when he is not around, so he goes home in a rage and beats his girlfriend to death. And all because of word of mouth: word of mouth formulated from a lie. And within the Little Oxford Dictionary, a lie is defined as, and I quote, “a false statement made deliberately by someone who knows that it is not true”, end of quote.

On January 26th, 2009, Mr Roy Britt said on , and I quote, that “Lies take longer than truth”, end of quote. And this is exactly the motive of Gossip: to falsely accuse and ridicule an individual’s gender of characteristics, by not only manipulating but hiding the truth and aggravating the victim of Gossip.

To retaliate, not in a positive aspect, but one full of negativity, and the negativity of Gossip is mostly based on the victim’s feelings towards what has been said.

Therefore, the outcome of our reaction is solly-based on our feelings, be it depression, anger!, rage!, lack of confidence on the basis of low self-esteem and low self-worth.

It has been estimated that within the voice newspaper of May 19th 2006 that, and I quote, “35% of patients within the La Toc psychiatric hospital are there due to depression”, end of quote.

Madam Chairperson, as I earlier stated, one of the outcomes of Gossip is depression. Hence, the situation faced by most of these patients had to be of a very trivial nature to bring them to that state. And according to Doctor Vincent Smith, a shrink on, and I quote “65% of my patients complain that they are depressed because of what people have said about them”, end of quote. states, and I quote, that “over the estimated five years, 6,352 teens have committed suicide because they either felt depressed, left out and pushed away because of what their peers had to say about them”, end of quote.

Therefore, I ask you today: Is Gossip just another casual conversation? Is Gossip just another common means of sharing facts and views? No! And I repeat: No! It is not!

It is a virus, it is a force and a nasty habit that manipulates and drains an individual of self-worth and values, both emotionally and mentally.

Don not be a carrier of the virus Gossip! It is infectious, it is spiteful…and It hurts!

Open your eyes!

Cover your ears!

And close your mouth to Gossip!

I thank you.

By Porter St. Clair

Coordinators, Instructors, Trainees, Madam Chair person, good morning to you. The true meaning of life by George Harrison, and I quote, “Life is itself a question and an answer. I call life a state of awareness. We live and enjoy till we are aware of our existence and the day we lose this sense and understanding of life, we move outside the periphery of life. Every one of us often complains of things that happen during this journey of awareness, indicating that there has been some misunderstanding between the life and oneself”, end of quote.

I believe that life is the time in which you make something of yourself, an experience that you make yourself. It is how you interpret it. You may like, you may hate it though it’s just what you make it to be but it is life.

Life is life is only understood by those who live it in a positive way.

To my peers I’m asking what is life? Does this seem like a strange question to you? Well let’s think about it. If you had to explain to someone what ‘life’ is, what would you tell them?

Do all living things move? Do they eat and breathe? Even though we all seem to know what is meant by saying something is ‘alive’ it’s not very easy to describe what ‘life’ is, it’s almost as hard as describing where life came from.

Let me explain to you according to the modification by Lisa Gardener on July 29th 2004. The study of life is called ‘biology’ and the people who study it are ‘biologists’. They even have a tough time describing what life is! But after many years of studying living things, from the mold on your old tuna sandwich to monkeys in the rainforest, biologist have determined that all living things do share some things in common.

My peers I believe that life is important and I am happy to be alive so whatever you do, do it in a positive way in order to enjoy life to its fullest making use of all good opportunity that will come your way. I repeat life is just what you make it.

Thank You.

Child Neglect

By Anonymous

Winner of the Directors Award

Judges, instructors, invited guests and fellow trainees, a pleasant good morning. I am Anonymous representing C.A.R.E. Soufiere Life Centre. My topic for today’s youth speak out is child neglect.

What is Neglect; child neglect is the failure to meet a child’s essential needs through inadequate parenting and lack of responsibility. Neglect is about what parents and care givers don’t do. We all understand that parents are not able to meet all their child’s needs all the time, but it is persistent neglect, or the failure to deal with something which is life treating for the child, that causes the most harm.

Neglect causes children to develop more slowly, falling further and further behind their age group on all measures of development including language, creativity and social skills. Neglected children are likely to have difficulty with solving problems, and may be more angry and frustrated than other children. Every year thousands of children are affected by neglect. Neglect is too important to ignore. Because neglect is a hidden problem, it can easily be ignored. Although it’s effects may not be as obvious as other forms of child abuse, neglect causes serious and lasting damage to children. The whole community is responsible for protecting children, and if we want to do something about neglect, it means we must first recognise that neglect is a serious issue.

What all children need is to grow up healthy and happy. Children need to feel love and cared for. Parent’s often don’t understand how much their child need’s from them. They may be poor at anticipating hazards or making sure their child gets basic things like good food, adequate clothing, enough sleep and age appropriate supervision. In my case I am a victim of neglect.

I was born in Lecister city in London, my mother was white and my farther was black. Regardless of the race difference we were one happy family. Something happened and my mother started drinking alcohol, she became an alcoholic. She could not cope with the six of us. Can you imagine how hard it was? We were not able to get love, comfort, food, clothing these basic needs every household shares. What was really sad was to part from the family where love and harmony was once the centre of our lives.

Someone has asked the question; is there a greater crime than child neglect.

I personally say no!

Dear friends the Lord has burdened my heart for our children and given me this message to send to parents and I quote Deuteronamy Chapter 6 Verse 6-7: and these words which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shalt talk to them thou walkest by the way, and when thou riseth up.

Today I am proud to stand here in this youth speak out to talk about my topic, child neglect, with the help of the almighty Father, my parents and my instructors. Once again I thank you.

Many might ask what prostitution is. It is defined by the Collins English dictionary as and I quote

(A woman who engages in sexual intercourse for money and a man who engages in such activity especially in homosexual practices) end of quote. Good morning Judges, Coordinators, Instructors, trainees, special invited guest and my worthy opponents my name is Cherrisse Taylor proudly representing C.A.R.E. Anse-La-Raye I greet u with a warm welcome to the 2009 youth speak out. This morning I will be speaking about why young girls prostitute themselves.

There are many reasons why young girls prostitute themselves; one of the many reasons may be because of sexual abuse at a tender age. And when I say sexual abuse I mean in or out of the home. At home children don’t get the necessities that they require from their parents and are forced to prostitute themselves for money. Madam Chairperson (St Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians chapter 4 verse16 and I quote: our body is the temple of god end of quote) but some people do not treat it that way. They tended to hold on to the unpleasant experiences that affected them at a tender age. Not only did it affect emotionally physically and psychologically but mentally.

And another reason why girls prostitute is because they want to provide for themselves and they think that their body is their only valuable asset. Researchers have shown that

No matter how women and girls get into prostitution, it is difficult to get out. Reason being their Pimps and brothel owners use violence, threats, and addictions to drugs and alcohol to control the women, sometimes keeping them in slavery-like conditions. Often women can leave prostitution only after they are used-up, become ill and no longer make money for the pimps. Women in prostitution are further burdened with a stigmatized identity that is impossible to escape, unless their pasts are kept it a secret. According to Ernie Allen on Google. Com and I quote’ there are numerous opinions and industry remains in business because society has allowed the institution. Their main points for prostitution undermine the social institution of marriage exploit woman as well as poising the country’s moral climate. End of quote’

Statistic as shown that in St. Lucia the rate of prostitution is rising because more and more exotic clubs are been established and prostitutes’ are coming from countries such as Santa Domingo, St Martin and the list goes on and on even on the computer we find young woman nodding them self and that can lead to prostitution . What message are we sending out to our young children seen they have access to the internet and the television.

There is no dignity in prostitution. Many of the acts of prostitution, including those that are photographed in the making of pornography, are intended to degrade, humiliate and express domination over women. The men do not respect or care for the prostitutes they get invalid with. Women don't emerge from sexual exploitation into positions of power, respect or admiration. They remain powerless as individuals and underclass as a group.

Madam Chairperson: Majority of the young girls in today’s society are prostituting themselves because they are under the influence of peer pressure.

Many unaccounted events occurred as a result of prostitution such as unwanted pregnancy sexually transmitted disease including HIV the killer aids. What some of these young girls and women do not understand is that they are the future of tomorrow. It does not say because unpleasant things happened to them in the pasts they can not overcome it and rise to the occasion and let the people that down graded them see that they can do it. I rest my case.

Power of the Tongue

By Lotoya Alfred

Joint 2nd Place Winner

Judges, Invited guest, Co-coordinators, Instructors, fellow opponents, trainees good morning. I am Lotoya Alfred one of the representatives for C.A.R.E. Anse-La-Raye and am here to share my views on this chosen topic. The Power of the Tongue.

Do you know what the tongue is? The tongue is this fleshy movable muscular organ on the floor of the mouth that manipulates food for chewing and swallowing. It is the primary organ of taste.

What is it used for? Tasting and Processing Foods: Your tongue works along with your teeth and gums and aid in chewing and swallowing. Your teeth help your tongue grind food as the tongue mixes the food in your mouth. Without your teeth, lips, and the roof of your mouth, your tongue wouldn't be able to form sounds of speech to form words. Saliva is needed for the proper functioning of the tongue. A dry tongue can't taste a thing so saliva helps the tongue and our sense of taste by keeping it wet. Saliva moistens food and helps break it down, it is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels to help it move which in turn makes it easier for the tongue to push the food to the back of the mouth for swallowing. The tongue also enhances the kissing experience.

The functions of the human tongue however is not what I am here to speak of…….its the power of the tongue and how much harm over good it can do if used indecently and for the good of it……Despite all its benefits, the tongue can be used negatively

There is an old proverb with a lot of wisdom, from Proverbs 18:21 “death and life are in the power of the tongue and they that love it shall eat its fruit, thereof”

What is mean by this is, what we say has the ability to create situations, emotions and thoughts in others. A kind word helps people, negative words hurt- sometimes for a very long time.

While the tongue should be used positively, with uplifting and encouraging words which will lead to joy, peace, prosperity and good results, it is being used negatively, with depressing, hopeless, words that tear down and lead to defeat. These negative words sometimes make it hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult time.

Do you know how powerful and destructive your words can be? They can "make or break" your dreams! Your words are containers for power, and by the words you speak you make your world.

Much can be said about a person by the way they use their tongue Sanaca once said, "Speech is the index of the mind." Jesus said that "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh."." In James 3:6, the Bible says that the tongue is "a fire, a world of iniquity", and James 3:8 calls the tongue a "deadly poison".The bible states “the tongue of a man is his sword”, A wise soldier knows never to draw his sword unless he is ready, able and willing to do battle. But a fool draws his sword aimlessly and is prone to cut himself to death."The bible states that there are 10 tongues

The lying tongue, the Flattering Tongue, the Proud Tongue- the Overused Tongue, the Swift Tongue, The Backbiting Tongue, The Talebearing Tongue, the Cursing Tongue- The Piercing Tongue, the Silent Tongue

The unfortunate thing is that the tongue is simply an instrument that is used. It does not think, nor devise evil, and by itself it really does absolutely nothing. Yet, in the same way that a car needs gasoline to drive, a plant needs fertilizer and water to grow so it is that the tongue nestled in our mouths control the direction of our lives. It is the owner or master of the tongue that determines how it is used. The tongue basically reflects the contents of the owner’s heart. In Matt 15: 11, 18 and 19 Jesus stated “Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man…But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies”, (disrespect for God and sacred things). It stands to reason therefore; that the things we say is often a reflection of the things in our heart. In order to control our tongue, we must first control our thoughts. Right and wrong thinking is the basis for controlling our words. It's the simplest principle, yet it's the most difficult area in our lives to discipline.

You are going to have to be disciplined and be vigilant with your tongue. If you allow the words of the devil or negative people to penetrate your soul, you will lose your battle. There will be times when you want to open your mouth and let loose a whole stream of words that express your anger and frustration or your impressions about someone or something. Don't do it! Do not allow your condition to control your words. Determine that your words are not going to hinder or destroy your destiny.

Before I conclude my speech I will leave you with this story;

A group of frogs was traveling through the woods and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the unfortunate frogs they would never get out. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and simply gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and suffering and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs asked him, "Why did you continue jumping? Didn't you hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. This story teaches three lessons:

1. There is the power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word

to someone whom is down can lift them up and help them make it

through the day.

2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill

3. If you ignore the negative things people have to say about you, you can

Thought: Guard the words you speak

The Poetry of Encoya Alicia Pollard

I am jealous of every girl

That hugged you because

For one moment they have

Held my whole world

In their arms.

I never really knew you

You were just another one

Of my friends.

But when I got to know you,

You became my world.

There are 12 months in a year

30 days in some months

7 days in a week

24 hours in a day

60 minutes in an hour

But only one of you in my life.

Once I dropped a tear

Into the ocean

The day I find it is

The day I stop loving you.
